How old is this woman? She is possibly the youngest looking 86 year old we've encountered.

Liz Smith says she hasn't had plastic surgery. Here's her non-surgical facelift story in her own words;

No kidding, I say eye makeup. When I bother to fool with these old eyes of mine is when I go out and people demand to know if I’ve had a face lift. Visible eyebrows, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara make a real finishing touch to one’s look. Also, I know it’s old-fashioned but you can’t beat lipstick. And not that black or bright red stuff either if you are over 40.

Liz Smith is a famous gossip columnist that was laid off from the New York Post today. She's not ready to retire yet and will be writing five days a week for the women's website she founded, wowOwow.

Eva Mendes' Headstand for Anti-Aging

Eva Mendes, age 34, says she lies upside down on a slant board for about 20 minutes before a photo shoot or a hot date. She says this increased blood flow to the upper body and face will bring on a vibrant, flushed-with-youth look.

An alternative method would be the headstand yoga asana, which many women practice on a regular basis partly for this 'natural face-lift' effect.

The New York magazine had an unusually detailed article last Sunday about new trends in plastic surgery for celebrities and the New York elite. The stretching face-lift of old is giving way to plumping the face outwards by adding fat and injections to it. The article names at least three of the top plastic surgeons in New York and provides us with a scoop on what aging celebrities (such as Madonna who turns 50 this year) are doing to keep their faces looking young. Evolence: A New Dermal Filler

Evolence is a new dermal filler that's just been approved by the FDA in the United States though it's been available in Europe and Canada for three or four years.

It's made out of natural collagen - pig skin - and it lasts longer than many other fillers. The Evolence web site has some interesting before and after photos of four beautiful women who start out with deep nasolabial folds. The 'after Evolence' photos are very persuasive as to its anti-aging powers. They tell us that these photos are real photos of real women and they have not been retouched.

Looking Tired or Sad: Eyebrows and Eyelids are Key

You may not be feeling tired but if your upper eyelids are drooping or if the distance between your upper eyelid and eyebrow is greater than average than other people may think you are tired.

This is one of the findings of a recent survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. They are making the statement that how you look (in terms of tired, sad, angry or happy expressions) may have more to do with your facial aesthetics than it has to do with how you actually feel.

Here's their summary of other appearances of emotion;

Disgust
Lowering or slanting the inner corner of the eyebrows towards the nose, as well as adding forehead winkles significantly increased the perceived facial expressions of anger and disgust.

Fear & Surprise
Raising the upper eyelids produced an increase in the perception of surprise and fear. Also, raising the outer corner of the eyebrows produced an increase in the perception of surprise.

Cosmetic Acupuncture: Does it Work?

Acupuncturist Siamak Shirazi claims that cosmetic acupuncture can take years off your face. It helps to eliminate fine lines and makes the deeper lines look softer. It can also help to minimize dark circles, puffy eyes, double chin, sagging skin, and dropping eyelids. He says cosmetic acupuncture works by increasing collagen production and also tones the muscles under the facial muscles which makes your face look tighter.

It is not as dramatic as facial surgery but he says people will definitely notice the difference. Ten treatments in the space of five weeks is what is required and he says you should start seeing the difference after about five treatments. The package costs about $1,500.00.

We'd be interested in hearing from other acupuncturists (and any people who've tried it) about the validity of these claims.

Aging Celebrities and Their Plastic Secrets

MSNBC has a very interesting slideshow showing before and after photos of about twenty celebrities. Many of these Hollywood stars have gone much too far with their cosmetic surgery habits.

Plastic surgeon, Dr. Tony Youn, takes a look at each of these examples and gives us his opinion on what these people have had done to their face.

Kathie Lee Gifford: More than Botox Here?

Celebitchy is convinced Kathie Lee Gifford, age 54, has had some serious work done on her face over the years. She says;

It’s pretty obvious that Kathie Lee has had more than a few visits to her plastic surgeon’s office. Her face looks way too smooth and pulled and she’s starting to look like Priscilla Presley.

It looks to me like Gifford had more than one face lift along with ongoing maintenance that results in a mask-like effect on her face."

We'll be seeing a lot more of Kathie Lee Gifford soon. She's joining the Today Show as of this week.

Is facial acupuncture effective in erasing wrinkles?

The New York Times has an interesting article today. They interviewed half a dozen women who said their facial puffiness has decreased, their under-eye bags have disappeared and their wrinkles are diminished or softened after acupuncture treatments.

There is still no one winning name for the procedure. Sometimes it's called 'facial rejuvenation', others advertise it as an 'acupuncture face-lift' or 'cosmetic acupuncture'. It works by stimulating the body's natural energies, called qi.

Fixing the Sagging Jowls

Margery, a woman somewhat older than 45, went ahead with a mini face-lift a few weeks ago. She's happy with the results. She mainly wanted to fix her sagging jowls. She says she didn't like to see "how my once sharp jaw line was rounding, sagging; how my once smooth, taut cheeks were collapsing over my mouth."

Why did she do it? She says she probably wouldn't have gone ahead with it if it wasn't for everyone else in her social circle getting something done. She says her mini face lift was about keeping up with other women;

"If none of us could do anything—from Botox to facelifts, maxi or mini—then we’d all go to seed together. As it is, we have this arsenal of options available. They work. Ignoring them has become akin, at least among certain women, to “letting yourself go,” as Mother used to say. The dilemma’s analogous to steroids in baseball. If half the team’s doing them, the other half loses its edge. Then what?"

Dr Sherrell J. Aston is one of the better known cosmetic surgeons in Manhattan. He is somewhat of a star in his field. He's rumored to have performed face-lifts for many celebrities including Anna Wintour, Tipper Gore, Catherine Deneuve, Bob Dole, Carolina Herrera and Mary Archer.

He makes an absolute fortune as a surgeon. His face-lift costs about $25,000 and it's another $10,000 for an eye-lift or a brow-lift. He does up to three surgeries a day and averages 40 hours of surgeries a week.

Some Non-Surgical Face Lift Options

The Daily Mail has a good article about various ways to go about getting a facelift in less invasive ways than actual facelift surgery. Here is Clair, a 55 year old actress, and one of their five featured before and after pictures. Clair chose Restylane Vital and went ahead with three treatments. She's very happy with the results and says her skin looks plumper and fresher and all the lines have softened.

Four other women who tried alternative procedures, including Titan (the infra-red face plumper), a radiowave facelift, Laresse (the super-injectable lift) and Palomar (a laser skin rejuvenator) are also interviewed. See their story on non-surgical face treatments here.
