A Smart Lipo Review

Dr. Oliver discusses Smart-Lipo on his Plastic Surgery 101 blog today. He's clearly not a fan of the procedure. He says;

The general "off the record" feelings of most experienced plastic surgeons experimenting with this is that these types of devices are safe but offer no clear advantage. Repeatedly it's described more as a successful marketing phenomena rather than a real improvement. It's still not established that delivering thermal energy below the skin affects "tightening" whatsoever, which is the whole gimmick of the laser. If it does, it doesn't appear to do it without still having to do most of the heavy lifting with traditional lipo.

Obsessed with Beauty

America the Beautiful is a documentary about the less pleasant aspects of the pursuit of beauty and cosmetic surgery.

The film opens in New York this Friday and in Los Angeles later in August.

Roger Ebert says, The film is pulsing with barely suppressed rage, and by the end, I shared it. It’s about a culture “saturated with the perfect,” in which women are taught to seek an impossible physical ideal, and men to worship it.

Lift Magic is a website that lets you upload your own photo and then alter it based on your choice of plastic surgery procedures.

You can also upload any photo you find online - your favorite celebrity for example - and try out different surgery procedures on them including;

eyebrow lift
mid brow enhancement
inner cheek enhancement
outer cheek enhancement
cheek lift
nose reduction
lip augmentation
weight reduction

We haven't tried it yet but would be curious to hear from anyone that has.

Brigitte Nielsen Gets Plastic Surgery (on TV)

Brigitte Nielsen, age 44, is planning to get a facelift, eye lift, breast lift, fat injections, liposuction and dental work.

And she wants us all to watch this as it happens. Nielson was married to Sylvester Stallone for a couple of years in the mid 1980's.

She tells Der Spiegel:

"I know I am the first female celebrity in the world who has allowed herself to be filmed like that in an operating theater. I know I will be breaking a taboo. But I’m sure that it will provoke a new discussion. It’s time things change. I feel 30 and want to look that way again.”

Nielsen posed for Playboy magazine 20 years ago and plans to do so again later this year to show off her new body. See some good photos of what she looks like now (with a scary close-up of all the wrinkles on her face) and how she looked when younger.

The Going Rate for a Cosmetic Surgeon in the U.K.

Transform is the largest comsmetic surgery business in the U.K. They employ 40 cosmetic surgeons. And if things go according to plan Transform will become the world's first publicly traded cosmetic surgery firm.

They say their average full-time cosmetic surgeon makes about 300,000 pounds per year. That would be equivalent to almost $600,000 dollars per year.

The Guardian interviewed one of their executives, who explained how different age groups tend to want different cosmetic procedures. Between the ages of 18 and 25, young women tend to have breast augmentation ($8,000) or lip enhancement, in their thirties they choose tummy tucks ($8,000) or liposuction (from $5,400) followed by face-lifts (from $9,500) in the mid-fifties. The oldest person operated on at Transform was a woman in her seventies who had the bags under her eyes reduced (from $5,500).

Cosmetic Surgery for Isabel Allende

Isabel Allende, age 65, is one of the world's most amazing writers. She has sold over 50 million books and her most famous novel is probably The House of the Spirits. She writes in a magical realism style, her work is often compared to Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

In a recent interview, Isabel Allende says she first had some cosmetic surgery six years ago. She says she leads a very public life and "I saw some pictures of me looking awful and I thought, oh no. Enough of that".

She doesn't say if it was a face-lift or what type of surgery she had. She says "Yes, I think that every age has its own beauty, but there are things about old age that if one can correct or prevent, why not? For example, warts. Would you like to have a wart with hairs? At no age is that beautiful. Why would you want age spots if there are creams and lasers that can take care of it? There are other things about aging that you cannot correct, and you have to live with -- you will get shorter, you will lose your hair. As long as you can help, why not? I am very vain. I don't mind wrinkles, but I don't like spots."

A Plastic Surgeon: Post Divorce

The Times Online has a very interesting post about a day in the life of a plastic surgeon. Jean Louis Sebagh, age 53, is recently divorced. He lives for his work and describes his work as 'aesthetic sculpture'.

He's a control freak - a Virgo with Virgo rising - "the tray, the bottles, they all have to be in the same place. Order and routine make me feel safe."

His new girlfriend is age 44. He says "the prerequisite for great sex isn’t beauty, or youth — it’s self-esteem."

Plastic Surgeons Feel the Slump

The best summary we've come across about how plastic surgery clinics are beginning to feel a slump in demand due to the looming recession is yesterday's article in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Plastic surgery appointments are down significantly at many clinics. Those experiencing the greatest slowdown are clinics who rely on a younger, less wealthy clientele who seek breast enlargement surgery and liposuction. For such less established clinics who depend more on advertising than on client referrals, the economic pinch is more severe.

It would be interesting to know if plastic surgeons are advertising more instead of less to counteract this decline in their business. Many clinics still don't know they can do some very cheap, effective and (targeted only to their cities) online advertising.

Surgeons relying on a high percentage of nonsurgical cosmetic services or reconstructive plastic surgery are seeing the least decrease in demand.

Riyo Mori Did Not Get Plastic Surgery

Many beauty pageant contestants have undergone plastic surgery. But the current Miss Universe, Riyo Mori, has not resorted to having any work done, other than 'just a little plumper in the lips'.

So says Ines Ligron. And she should know as she is the National Director for Miss Universe in Japan.

But Ligron says surgical enhancements are quite common in the beauty pageant world;

Like steroids in sports, surgical enhancements are the dirty little secret of the beauty pageant world. But, unlike steroids, artificial enhancements in beauty competition aren't banned, or even particularly frowned upon.

Ligron said it is commonplace for contestants to remove a rib or two to make their waist smaller, to have breast augmentation, nose reshaping or eyebrow lifting. Complete reworking of the teeth is also de rigeuer.

Cosmetic Surgeons Versus Plastic Surgeons

What's the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon? Here's what Dr. Gregory Buford has to say about it. He's a board certified plastic surgeon.

Calling oneself a Cosmetic Surgeon basically means nothing. The ABMS, the American Board of Medical Specialties, recognizes a total of 29 specialties for which it will grant board certification, one of which is plastic surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not recognized by the American Board of medical specialties and is thus considered to be a bogus board.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons was just very helpful in putting through legislation in Florida which would require a practitioner to advertise what their board certification is in. For example, if someone was a cosmetic surgeon and said they were board certified, they would have to clearly state what they were board certified in.
