A Front Yard Makeover

Submitted by Meg Wilson on October 14, 2008 - 20:34.

We see green lawns in front of almost every house in the neighborhood where we live. They're usually very pretty and well maintained but apparently they are a major contributor to a filthy future.

There was a very interesting article in the New Yorker earlier this summer about our odd habit of the green lawn. (See The Turf War.) It turns out that these lawns across America take up about the space of the entire state of New York. They use up one third of all residential water use and cost about forty billion dollars a year to maintain. Our lawns are smoother and more velvety than ever. But 'our relationship to the Beautiful remains vexed.' The amount of water, chemicals and fertilizer we use for this appearance is a real safety and environmental concern.

In the video below, one woman decides to ditch the beautiful green lawn.
