What's a Philistine?

What's a philistine? It's a person whose material means exceed his/her cultural and/or spiritual level.

Why are we asking? Just read a fun article in the New Yorker about the Hippie Rock in Central Park.

Jim Rado says "The philistines have taken over where the hippies once were."
