The read count comes with the blogging software we use. It is Drupal.org and really fantastic (and free) blogging package but unless you are a programmer it would be quite difficult to set up and customize. (Adriana is the resident computer pro here and got it set up in no time.)
The read count is quite misleading though because it only registers readers who take some action (such as clicking on a link in the post or commenting) or who arrive at the post from another link. It doesn't seem to record people who just read the post and scroll down to the next one.
