What Causes Gray Hair?

Submitted by Adriana Rae on March 30, 2007 - 07:24.

Scientists have discovered why hair follicles turn gray. They stumbled on this finding while researching skin cancer.

The loss of hair color is due to the dying off of melanocytes.

Melanocytes are specialized cells that manufacture and store the pigment which combines with kerationocytes (hair-making cells) to color the hair and give it a shiny and healthier appearance.

These findings are interesting but it will be a long time before cosmetic or pharmaceutical products can be developed to reverse the process of dying melanocytes.

In the meantime, yoga practitioners have been claiming for eons that the regular practise of inverted asanas, and especially the yoga headstand can prevent and even reverse graying hair.

The above photo is of Anne Kreamer. She recently decided to stop coloring her hair and enjoy her beautiful natural gray color.
