Vanity Fair Debuts in Germany

Submitted by Meg Wilson on February 6, 2007 - 11:22.

Vanity Fair Magazine is being launched in Germany. It will hit newsstands tomorrow. (The cover you see above is the US version.)

Vanity Fair is very successful in the United States with a monthly circulation of 1.2 million and readership of over six million. It's a big moneymaker, "bursting with massive advertisements for luxury products". The US edition focuses on celebrity talk, high society, Hollywood, political reporting and essays.

But can it succeed in the German market? Nobody is sure. The new editor-in-chief says "Theoretically, glamour is simply another concept of reality. But the Germans believe it's a type of anti-reality."

The ambitious idea is also that this Vanity Fair will be a weekly rather than a monthly publication. The goal is to sell a minimum of 120,000 copies but the hope is the circulation will soon grow to 300,000.

The rumor is that competing German magazines (Bunte, Gala, Stern, Max and Park Avenue) are quite worried about this new launch and are watching closely.
