Oprah on Anti-Aging Secrets

Submitted by Adriana Rae on October 6, 2006 - 14:51.

One of Oprah's shows this week was about aging and 'anti-aging secrets'. Her famous guests included Geena Davis, 50, Diahann Carroll, 71, and Nora Ephron, 65. (Pictured from right to left.)

Some of the audience was offended with the message this show seemed to convey. Here's a couple of comments from the board on Oprah's website.

"What I do not understand is that Oprah is saying all the time, that she can be truthful to herself now that she is over 50. But that does not seem to apply to her looks. She looks about as fake as anyone possible could. When she went on that road trip and showed up in the Wild West with full make up, she looked so out of place and so artificial people must have thought that she is a drag queen, but I suppose she has to do that because otherwise nobody would recognize her. I personally think she looks more interesting without make up and her face has real character. With the make up it is just a painted on doll's face.

What is wrong with looking your age? Most men look good with gray hair and without make up. Some of the older women portrayed in the show look like aged Barbie Dolls. And it is not so difficult to look good at fifty. After sixty it gets more challenging. Why do you want to look forever young , have great sex, etc.? There is a time for everything in life. I looked great when I was young and I had great sex for decades, now I enjoy gardening, reading, studying things I was not interested in when I was younger. Probably due to hormone change, my interest in sex is not so strong anymore. This relentless pursuit of forever looking young is just plain stupid and it does not help in reality. We cannot stay forever young, even if we try so hard. Of course there is a whole industry concentrating on making us feel bad about getting older and most people succumb to the pressure. One of my girlfriends in her fifties had liposuction to get rid of some of the fat around her middle. The only thing she got rid of was a lot of money and all she traded in was a lot of pain for months. Another one blew up her breasts in a desperate attempt to catch somebody else's husband. When I saw these fake breasts on her aging body I could not imagine that any man would be turned on by that. We are always complaining about older men dating younger women, but we are as ridiculous if we are trying to pretend to be decades younger. We are all behaving like puppets on a string operated by Madison Avenue."

Another woman said;

puleeaze!

"I am feeling very frustrated! Here we are again. Women of privilege talking about how comfortable they are with their age. So happy that with plastic surgery and the right hair color they have come to accept themselves exactly as who they are. Ugh! Here I am- A regular woman, 48 years old, working, trying to get used to my age, my normal hair color which is salt & pepper-and because at the wage that I earn, I can't afford to save for retirement and maintain a nice brown hairdo. Sorry ladies on Oprah today, I'm not buying your 'acceptance'. How about having some real world women talk about living and accepting life on lifes terms and feeling good. Rather than feeling good with a hollywood income to pay for the regular visits to the beautician and plastic surgeon. Whew! Thanks I feel better now."
