Virtual Celebrity Makeovers

Submitted by Adriana Rae on September 30, 2006 - 13:29.

Stardoll.com is a site where you can go and dress up and otherwise 'makeover' your favorite celebrity.

Liz Kelly of the Washington Post wrote a review about it yesterday. She found it to be very addictive. She especially liked the idea of creating the "Me Doll". Above is Kelly's idealized avatar; what she created as her 'Me Doll' using the free options available on the site and abstaining from the temptation to buy "Star Dollars" to make her virtual doll even more personalized.

Stardolls is a very popular pastime. The site is getting over one million unique visitors a month and has received over $6 million in venture capital financing.

How times have changed. The second image here shows the cut-out paper dolls that girls used to play dress-up with. This one was the popular Betsy McCall featured in the McCall magazine each month, many years ago.
