Bariatric surgery has been found to carry a low risk of death when performed at high-volume academic medical centers, according to a new study at the University of California-Irvine Medical Center.
The study covered 1052 gastric bypass operations performed at 29 institutions. The subjects had body body mass indexes of between 35 to 70.
Although only four people died within 30 days of surgery the complication rate was 16% and a further 7% of the people had to be readmitted to hospital within thirty days.
