The New York Times had a good article this weekend about the new popular trend for teenage girls to wear colored contact lenses. These colored contacts make the eyes look bigger because they cover not just the iris, as normal lenses do, but also part of the whites of the eye. They're known as 'circle lenses'.

Lady Gaga has created a surge in the growth of this trend although her bigger-than-life eyes in her music video were generated by a computer.

These colored contacts are being bought online and they are not legal in the U.S. One needs a prescription to buy contacts. This trend could lead to growing eye infections and more serious problems. See a post about the serious risks of eye infections (and even blindness) here.

As an eye doctor, I can tell you this is a TERRIBLE idea. I have already seen patients several patients who have lost their vision due to these lenses. These lenses cause corneal ulcers. That is why the FDA banned them in the US. It can literally happen overnight. The only way to even attempt to fix the vision is with a corneal transplant. Is your vanity worth losing your eyesight? And no, I don't even prescribe contact lenses so this isn't about me losing money to an overseas distributor.

The Stylist tells us today that Angelina Jolie's secret to covering up her 13 tattoos is a full coverage foundation called Cover FX.
