Funky Underwear Takes Off

Submitted by Meg Wilson on May 15, 2008 - 11:11.

April Spring is the designer of a new breed of women's underwear called FOXERS.

We wanted to interview her and ask about FOXERS.

CM: How did you ever come up with this idea and where were you in your life when you decided to stop whatever else you were doing and focus on selling comfortable and sexy underwear?

April: Hello Meg, Thank you for your interest in FOXERS. I came up with the idea to put the men's cotton boxer top, which has a history of peering above the men's jeans, while sitting at an outdoor cafe in Penang, Malaysia with my husband. I was noticing another thong showing on what could have been a cute outfit, when I said to my husband, we need to make a panty that is o.k. to stick out. Later I purchased a pair of boxers and a pair of women's boyshorts and had them sewn together to create what we now call Foxers boxers, which are patent pending.
I started this career in 2004 when my husband's career took him to Malaysia for over two years and I decided it was the perfect time to make the transition from Investor Relations and Boutique owner representing Florida Designers to Fashion Designer; a dream since before I was 10 years old. While in Malaysia I studied fashion illustration, piano, Mandarin, Malay, and researched apparel manufacturers. During fashion school I was invited to represent the U.S. at the second annual Silk Week in China as the American Designer. This is when I decided that Fashion Design was my new career which followed my passion.

CM: When did you make your first sale? What stores can people find FOXERS in now? We've noticed you have a very attractive and innovative website. How long have you been selling product from your site? Are your online sales a high percentage of your total revenues?

April: We made our first sale to my sister April 18 2007 and she is so proud of this; and our first wholesale representative based in the Chicago apparel mart launched six stores in the mid-west for us June 3, 2007 and we grew to almost 60 stores in approximately 90 days. We have stores all around the world and approximately 100 plus in the U.S. We have new distributors opening in Canada and Australia, and we have a store in Dubai.

Thank you for the nice comments on our website. We receive so many great emails about how easy to navigate and shop our site is as well as the clean design. We opened the site April 26, 2007 and we have done almost no advertising for the site but it is growing rapidly since we have celebrity associations and I was a guest on The Big Idea. The online sales represent approximately 10 to 20% of our sales since 2008 depending on the activity in publicity.

CM:That's a very rapidly growing lingerie business! What do you see ahead for FOXERS over the next three years?

April:Yes, we are growing rapidly but cautiously. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement and run with too many ideas. However, we have been blessed to have so much success with our launch, but this doesn't come without many hours of dedication, a keen judgment of who to trust as business partners and where to go next. We have a long term plan to have FOXERS as a full clothing line for all sizes and both men and women as well as pets too. We just had our first men's FOXERS photo shoot last week and pre-launch fashion shows are going on every week since May 9 in Hampton Roads, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. We hope that we can maintain the excitement, grow steady to cover the globe with the garments we have and build a solid foundation for a long term reliable and fresh clothing brand, FOXERS.

CM:Thanks much for the interview. If you ever get that funky underwear fashion show on your website transferred over to a YouTube video, let us know, we would love to show if off here.

Submitted by Meg Wilson on March 23, 2008 - 20:59.

Sean "Diddy" has a hot new model, Aaron Pope, to pose for his new Sean John's underwear. Hopefully this will not be a sweat-shop enterprise, a serious accusation that's hounded Sean Combs in the recent past.

Eva Mendes, age 34, is the new face for Calvin Klein underwear. We'll be seeing her underwear commercials worldwide soon.

Mendes, who used to be teased in school for her buck teeth (and who is now known for her 'best celebrity teeth') replaces Natalia Vodianova, age 26, (in photo below). Natalia, the famous Russian model, was Calvin Klein's choice for the past three or four years. Natalia has given birth to three children since starting her modeling career and marrying a Russian real estate heir. Below is a racy video with Natalia for Calvin Klein Underwear;

Submitted by Meg Wilson on March 16, 2008 - 07:28.

Stephanie Allmon asked four women to wear the various Spanx products for a month and has written up a good review of their body shaping products. One woman really liked the Spanx Slim Cognito Mid-Thigh Bodysuit Shaper Shapewear She exclaimed "My husband said, 'Why don't you wear that dress more often?' It's one I wear all the time, but obviously, I look dramatically better in it with Spanx!"

Girdles for Men

Submitted by Meg Wilson on March 15, 2008 - 14:56.

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article today about the growing demand for men's girdles. Although men's girdles are starting to sell in good numbers, compression underwear is rarely called a 'girdle'. Much more masculine sounding names are 'support boxers', 'compression shorts' and 'bodyshaping underwear'.

Some of the leading companies catering to this trend are Go Softwear, Andrew Christian, Undergear and Solidea.

The two girdles shown above are some of the many sold on Amazon today. The black shirt is a Cotton Concealer Compression Gynecomastia Muscle Shirt It stretches and recoils as your body moves but on the inside are powerful layers of nylon spandex knit binding your chest, flattening your belly and pressing against your back in support. Wear it to workout or down the street, the compression is a secret between you and your shirt.

The white 'compression body shirt girdle' is an invisible undershirt that eliminates bulges throughout your upper body. It gives you the straight lines you want and provides your back with support from just under your neck to your lower back. The reinforced panel in the mid-section provides extra tummy flattening benefits.

FOXERS boxers: Funky Women's Underwear

Submitted by Meg Wilson on March 7, 2008 - 11:21.

FOXERS boxers is a great new idea in women's underwear.

Men's boxers seem so comfy largely due to their broad cotton waistband. FOXERS has taken this type of waistband and crossbred it with sexy women's underwear attached.

Especially for women who like to wear low-rise jeans, these underwear are worth checking out. See their photo gallery.

FOXERS is a young company but their lingerie is already available in 90 retail stores and they're expanding rapidly.

We are intrigued by their creative thinking and online business savvy and we're hoping to interview them here.

Update: Read our interview with the founder of Foxers.

A Divorce in Erotic Underwear

Submitted by Meg Wilson on February 19, 2008 - 07:37.

Joe Corré and Serena Rees seperated over a year ago and are getting divorced now.

They are the owners and founders of 'the world's most erotic lingerie' company - Agent Provocateur.

The rumor is that as a result of the divorce proceedings, Agent Provocateur is dropping Lily Allen from their latest ad campaign. Serena picked her and signed her on but Joe, who is creative designer, and who is now running the show without Serena, does not want her. Their previous celebrity models include Kate Moss and Kyle Minogue. (Their commercial with Kyle Minogue was so racy it was banned).

Joe and Serena met in 1992. They started Agent Provacateur in 1994. Here's an excerpt from an interview with them a few years ago. What they have done is to increase the peekaboo factor in modern office relationships. All over the nation, lady workers are giving their colleagues, of both sexes, sudden glimpses of mauve or baby-blue bra-strap or camisole string that implies, in a tip-of-the-iceberg way, some expensively sexy raiment at the end of it, and a matching riot of exotic underpinnings further down. You may have turned us all, I say, into a shocking bunch of voyeurs.

"It's funny about bra straps," she says. "When I was first designing them, I thought, how can I spend hours and hours staring at bits of elastic? But then it became really interesting to see how much of a difference to a woman I could make with little bits of elastic. The difference is about sexiness. It's something a woman does think about. She likes to know that she's wearing fantastic underwear, whether you can see it or not.

"The glimpse factor you're talking about is a male thing, but even if a woman sees a glimpse of underwear on another woman, that's sexy as well. But most women aren't aware of it. They don't go around saying, 'Look at my bra strap'. Although we do make beautiful straps that deserve to be seen."

"There was a nice story about Julia, this girl who used to work here..." begins Joe.

"You mentioned a name, Joe," says Serena. "You should never mention names".

"Anyway, this girl, she went to work for another company..."

"It's one of the customer rules, Joe," says his wife severely. "You should know that." She turns to me. "Everybody who works for us has to sign a confidentiality agreement, saying they'll never talk about the customers".

Read more from that interview here.
