Best Books for 9 Year Old Boys

Submitted by Adriana Rae on December 9, 2012 - 16:16.

I just did some Christmas shopping on Amazon and bought a few books for my son who will celebrate his 9th birthday in January. I'm pretty sure he will love all these classics, check them out, you might fondly remember some of these too.

I threw in a highly-rated flashlight with batteries (for under $8). Wishful thinking, but maybe he will try to sneak read some of these books under the covers with the flashlight after bedtime. That's what i used to do, but it's unlikely to happen, his preference is Minecraft before any books..

An Easy Minecraft Halloween Costume

Submitted by Meg Wilson on October 7, 2012 - 11:02.

Check out this fabulous video on how to make an easy Minecraft Halloween costume.

My eight year old son is completely absorbed in the Minecraft game now. And he spends his spare time watching YouTube instructional videos about the game. Minecraft is arguably the best video game to come along for kids in the past ten years. It's a virtual version of Lego and lets your kids be infinitely creative. It's become a huge cult favorite. It's approaching the popularity of Angry Birds..

If you're looking for a cheap Halloween costume for your boy(s), this is definitely one to consider making at home. (Also your kids will really enjoy watching the virtual world play at the beginning and end of this video).

Update: Also see the follow-up fun video tutorial on how to make the Minecraft pickaxe and sword for your halloween costume

The Essence of Beauty Product Commercials

Adriana Rae's picture
Submitted by Adriana Rae on January 16, 2012 - 22:21.

Here's a fun video parody of the stuff we see daily in beauty magazines and beauty product commercials. Filmmaker Jesse Rosten created this video after watching yet another infomercial for some beauty product. "The commercial showed before-and-after portraits, that to my eye, looked like the same photo just Photoshopped. I laughed to myself. Then I made this video."

"Rosten skewers the breathless tone, too-perfect imagery and dense double-speak of beauty-oriented spots and magazine spreads."

Favorite Toys for Seven Year Old Boys

Submitted by Adriana Rae on October 28, 2011 - 17:00.

My son (who will turn eight in January) has been our test user for the new Toy Shopping App we just launched. He really seemed to enjoy browsing the different toy categories but it took him no time at all to come up with his favorite toys. His letter to Santa now includes three toys. (He wanted to pick more but I told him Santa does not look kindly on kids who ask for too much.)

LEGO Walkie Talkies (which apparently work for up to a mile distance and have great customer reviews). He's really excited about running around the block with his friends and doing the walkie-talkie spy thing. (at Target, $19.99)

He also really wanted the Lego Star Wars Ewok Attack (at Target, $24.99)

And he is a huge Beyblade fan right now. So he picked the Beyblade Spin Control Ray Striker Set.(at Target, $29.99)

If I had let him choose a toy that cost more than $100 he would have ultimately wanted the Lego Republic Frigada which costs about $120.

Based on a sample of one (but also knowing what toys his friends are crazy about) it looks like Lego will be selling a lot of products to 7-8 year old boys again this year.

Target is currently offering free shipping for total purchases over $50 so it's an easy, painless way to get your xmas shopping underway.

Sears also has a huge toy selection and they are offering a (online shopping only) coupon savings of $5.00 for any purchase over $50 through to the end of the year. You'd need to use the coupon code SEARS2011. Kmart has the same deal.

YoYo.com is the giant new toy company owned by Amazon.com. They have a huge selection of toys and you will find many more eco, green and educational toys here than at typical department stores. They are offering a great deal of 10% off to any first time customers (up to a total of $20). Use coupon code YOYO10 to get this deal. They are also one company that does ship to countries outside the United States.

On Becoming a Plastic Surgeon

Submitted by Meg Wilson on March 2, 2011 - 10:11.

We're looking forward to reading Dr. Youn's new book about what it's really like to become a doctor. (See it at Amazon; In Stitches)

Other than being a leading plastic surgeon, Dr. Youn is the #1 plastic surgeon blogger on the Internet. You'll find a lot of sites (such as ours) talking about celebrities and their plastic surgery but Dr. Youn is one of the few writers who are actually qualified to review (and gossip about!) the latest developments in the surgical sphere of celebrity beauty enhancements. Check out his popular site at Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery.

Dr. Youn grew up in a small town where his family (from Korea) were one of only a handful of non-Caucasian residents. He says that other than being nerdy and from an immigrant family his handicap in his teenage years was a jaw that started to grow and protrude into 'cartoon'-like proportions. He was convinced his jaw was keeping him from getting dates so after finishing high-school he went to an oral surgeon to have it broken and set back. This experience was what first got him interested in cosmetic surgery. Check out this fun video below where he tells us about these early years;

In Stitches

Dr. Youn's book is due out in late April and has already gotten some great reviews;

"Surprisingly warm and unquestionably witty, In Stitches is a riveting look at the sacrifice it takes to become a premiere plastic surgeon. In a world where physicians can be almost god-like, Dr. Tony’s not afraid to show us his heart, his humor, and his humanity. I adored In Stitches and even though I’m not ready to book Dr. Tony for a face-lift, I’d sure like to call him for lunch." New York Times bestselling author Jen Lancaster

"Part 'Grey's Anatomy', part 'Nip-Tuck', In Stitchestakes you under the knife to expose the layers of one doctor's journey to become not only a plastic surgeon but also his own man. A humorous, heartfelt, honest memoir about med school and MCATs, fathers and sons, and finding your place in the world, In Stitches will tickle your funny bone, touch your heart and make you think differently about your doctor." —critically-acclaimed author Wade Rouse

“Tony Youn traces his success to a stern Korean father and his own fanatical work ethic -- but the real secret is his fabulous sense of humor. If you're contemplating medical school, you'll need three things: resilience, caffeine, and In Stitches -- a raucously funny and genuinely affecting account of what becoming a doctor is really like.” —Audrey Young, M.D., author of What Patients Taught Me: A Medical Student's Journey.

"In Stitches is well written, very readable and appropriately witty. I had the pleasure and opportunity of meeting and working with Dr Youn. I find him not only to be extremely capable and a great surgeon, but also a kind and generous man. In this book, I actually see a lot of myself in him. At times I was in tears and at others was laughing out loud. I highly recommend it!"Dr. Robert Rey of Dr. 90210
