Obsessed with Beauty

America the Beautiful is a documentary about the less pleasant aspects of the pursuit of beauty and cosmetic surgery.

The film opens in New York this Friday and in Los Angeles later in August.

Roger Ebert says, The film is pulsing with barely suppressed rage, and by the end, I shared it. It’s about a culture “saturated with the perfect,” in which women are taught to seek an impossible physical ideal, and men to worship it.

Cosmetic surgery is such an easy target. And the fact is that all societies, not just America, have placed great importance on physical beauty. I work with a Philadelphia liposuction surgeon and the vast majority of women interested in body contouring aren't seeking perfection, they just have a few lumps and bumps that make them self-conscious about their appearance. We don't berate people of either sex who take the time to take care of themselves through beauty, and healthy diet, and yes, a decent beauty regimen. Of course people can take it too far (that happens with everything), but for the majority of women, cosmetic surgery is about getting back to normal, not looking like a supermodel.
