A Choice of 8 Dermal Fillers
Submitted by Meg Wilson on February 4, 2008 - 07:39.
There are today a total of eight dermal fillers approved by the FDA, but this number is expected to go up soon. Dermal fillers are injected into the lips to make them look plumper and to diminish wrinkles that form mostly on the lower half of the face. (Botox is currently the king of wrinkle solutions for the top half of the face.)
Three of these dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid based. They last longer than collagen-based fillers and are made of synthetic or animal versions of the substances found in human joints;
- Restylane
- Juvederm
- Hylaform
Another three of the dermal fillers are collagen based. These are made from human tissue and do not require an allergy test but they only last two to six months;
- CosmoDerm
- CosmoPlast
- Cymetra
The last two approved dermal fillers are made from cow's collagen and are not big sellers these days;
- Zyderm
- Zyplast
Restylane and Juvederm are by far the most popular of these eight choices. Juvederm was introduced by Allergan last year. They are trying to catch up to the early lead established by Restylane.
