Shiny Happy People Video: A Song for Our Times?

Submitted by Adriana Rae on January 17, 2008 - 20:50.

I always loved the sad irony of this song by R.E.M. It's the Shiny Happy People Holding Hands. This happy dancing video clashes very badly with my previous fuzzy but vividly cynical imaginary visualization of this tune and lyrics.

But when viewing it for the first time, I still loved the spontaneous joie de vivre shown hy Kate Pierson here. She was 43 years old when she danced and sang for this video. She'll be turning 60 this year.

Lyrics:
Shiny happy people laughing
Meet me in the crowd
People people
Throw your love around
Love me love me
Take it into town
Happy happy
Put it in the ground
Where the flowers grow
Gold and silver shine
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing
Everyone around love them, love them
Put it in your hands
Take it take it
There's no time to cry
Happy happy
Put it in your heart
Where tomorrow shines
Gold and silver shine
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing
