The Flat Belly Diet: Just More MUFA

The Flat Belly Diet is getting a lot of attention today. It was featured on Good Morning America this morning. The diet is being promoted by Prevention magazine, who's Editor in Chief helped to write it.

The key point about the Flat Belly Diet is that we should eat many more of the good fats, or MUFA. MUFA's are the magical component that will melt our belly fat. MUFA stands for mono unsaturated fatty acid - the really good fat found in foods like most nuts and seeds, olive oil and avocados. If we eat a bit of MUFA at every meal we will feel more satiated and less likely to reach for other foods because we won't feel hungry.

Mary Anne Speeshok was on the TV show today extolling the benefits of the diet. She herself had lost 46 pounds thanks to the diet and looked fabulous. She has gone from a size 16 to a size 8. But note that she also adhered to a brisk walking program six days a week. Maybe this is even more important for achieving a flat belly?

Dieting is the practice of ingesting food in a regulated fashion to achieve or maintain a controlled weight. In most cases dieting is used in combination with physical exercise to lose weight in those who are overweight or obese. Some athletes however aspire to gain weight usually in the form of muscle. Diets can also be used to maintain a stable body weight. Diets to promote weight loss are generally divided into four categories: low-fat, low-carbohydrate, low-calorie, and very low calorie. A meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials found no difference between the main diet types low calorie, low carbohydrate, and low fat, with a 2–4 kilogram weight loss in all studies. At two years all calorie-reduced diet types cause equal weight loss irrespective of the macronutrients emphasized.

I think the key to losing any type of weight is to simply eat healthy and exercise on a consistent basis. Also, part of eating healthy consists of maintaining portion control and just eating enough to be satisfied versus eating to get full.
