Too Young for Breast Implants

Dr. Webster discusses a common situation in his practice. A young woman comes to him seeking breast implants. In the surgeon's opinion, the women's natural breasts are perfect. But in the women's eyes, her ideal of good breasts is implanted breasts. Her normal is a distorted normal.

This is becoming a real concern for doctors and even politicians. The number of teenage girls and very young women who are seeking implants is rising alarmingly.

Queensland may be the first place where breast implants, nose jobs, tummy tucks, liposuction and botox are regulated or even banned for under 18's. They may enforce a "cooling off" period between consultation and surgery, requiring parental consent, and compulsory medical and psychological evaluation of prospective patients. Alternatively, there could be a ban on purely cosmetic procedures for minors.

"I can appreciate that adolescence can be a difficult time, when body image is a very important part of development. But resorting to a surgeon's blade is an adult response, and it should be a decision that an adult makes," said Queensland's Premier, Anna Bligh.

I respect what Ms. Bligh, Queensland, Australia's Premier, has to say on this issue. In some cases, age really is nothing but a number, and I think a large part of whether someone's ready for cosmetic surgery is their level of maturity. I work with a plastic surgeon and of course he follows the minimum age limits set by law for his breast augmentation patients in Chicago. For surgeries such as nose jobs that may make sense for some teenagers, the emphasis should always be on maturity, whether the patient can make and informed choice, in short, behaving like an "adult."
