Miss Japan Wins Miss Universe

Miss Japan is the winner of this years Miss Universe contest. Riyo Mori, age 20, says that when she was still a young child her grandmother had predicted she would one day be Miss Japan.

Miss USA had earlier taken an unfortunate and likely painful fall in her high heels during the evening gown competition. See Rachel Smith fall here in this video. It looks as though she's lost even more weight since she's become Miss USA. She looked healthier in the earlier Miss USA video.

I am Japanese person living in Australia for 11years.
Definitely there is big gap between Japanses taste and western taste of beauty.
Often my friend would point out one of asian girl to tell me Oh she is hot! 80% of time I say she is rather not so pretty.
And when I see pretty asian girl friends would say she is ugly.
So obviously there are different.
I think Japanese go for more cute than beautiful most of time anyway.
And I think miss univers mean is suit for everybodys taste not only for Japanese people.
Some people might think she is ordinaly but certainly she is not ugly at all.
And everybody has different taste.
So so be it.

I do not know if Americans know what Japanese think about Miss Mori. Well... I don't wanna be harsh or anything but most of us think that she is not beautiful. Japanese women looking like Miss Mori tend to be recongnized as kind of ugly women here in Japan, therefore we all got surprised at this result. We just wanna let Americans know that there are tons of Japanese women looking much better than her. Please check out Japanese women who are popular in Japan such as Takigawa Christel, Mona Yamamoto, Karina, Sayo Aizawa and so on. Because of the result of Miss Universe competition, we have started to feel that there are some differences between Japan and the US in terms of the difinition of beaty. I just want to ask you people if you really think that Miss Mori deserves to be the top of the Miss Universe or not.

Unfortunately american standards of beauty are almost entirely decided on what is considered sexy (mostly by men then secondly by the wives wanting to gain those mens attention). Somewhere along the line a naturally beautiful face, a nice complexion (replaed by spray tans - eew), or beautiful hair (replaced by unnaturally bleached frizzy extentions or plastic clip on pieces) have become the norm. Actresses, models, etc. are chosen by who brings in the most $ - look at where that money is coming from and chances are the people spending the money (on FHM, Maxim, porn, or even tipping at Hooters) prefer the latter. In my opinion American mens tastes are growing tackier by the year. Younger men never call a woman beautiful - only 'hot'. No im not angry because im 'ugly' - I get called 'hot' all the time. . . . . . . and I hate it.

I checked out the other ladies you listed. Some were not born in Japan. Two of them were half caucasian and the mother Japanese.
Are popular beauty ideals becoming more of a mixed cultures?

I thought that the representative models for the pagents were first nominated by votes in the respective countries. So she must have won her way up to that right?

I don't think Miss Mori is ugly at all. However, yes, you're right. There are much, much, much more beautiful Japanese women than her. In fact, Kurara Ibana, Miss Japan in '06, should've won Miss Universe but finished 1st runner-up.

So it seems that the Miss Universe idiots compensated Japan this year by giving Miss Mori the crown. It's an eternal sin that Kurara Ibana didn't win Miss Universe in '06. It would be nice to see Miss Japan win the title every year, because Japanese women are so gorgeous. Sorry, but American women are overweight, badly aging cows. LOL
