It's really not so cool to be one of the 'jet set' these days. No one calls them the jet set anymore as this was a term used for movie stars, socialites and tycoons in the 1950's and 1960's when flying was still a very special and unusual treat for the average person. But the jet set is still out there today and there are many more of them. These people think nothing of flying from LA to Manhattan for a social weekend several times a year. They travel often and many even insist on their own private jets.

Now there is a bit of an undercurrent starting to build up about this kind of vain spewing out of massive quantities of carbon dioxide for frivolous purposes. The average passenger jet taking off the runway emits as much pollution as three thousand cars driving one mile. One passenger on a typical flight from New York to LA creates about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, the key greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.

Within the next few years many more of us will probably feel quite a bit more strongly about the not so cool people who jet and yacht and drive the shiniest and biggest gas guzzlers.
