How Long Does the Swelling Last?

If there are any surgeons reading this now, could you help answer this young woman's question. She posted it five days ago at AskEarth but hasn't really got an answer yet on how long she can expect the swelling to last.

Hi,

I'm eighteen years old and I just got a nose job last week. I look like a monster. I don't understand how this happened. I told the doctor what i wanted, and he operated on me, and i had to wear a cast for a week. And when he took it off, i noticed that my nose looks bigger and abnormal. I look like an alien.

He told me not to worry at all, because i am still very swollen, and what i see now is not the final result of my rhinoplasty and that i have to be patient. But i am really scared, i don't want to look like this. My nose looks abnormal. I wanted it to be thinner and shorter. Oh my god, i don't know what to do now. I know i have to wait, and i guess I'm still swollen but it just doesn't look good. He said that the final result of rhinoplasty can take up to a year. I don't know if thats true or if he's just trying to calm me down. What do i do??? Please help me.

How long will it be swollen for?? How can i speed up the recovery process?

I have to say - what a relief to read this frustration from you. I just got my nose revealed to me today after 1 week as well. It's huge! It's so big - My husband tells me how straight it is -- Great, how about the size. I am sooooooooo hoping that the nose settles down. No one seems bothered execpt me! I don't know if there's hope, but at least there's someone else who has had the same reaction as I have.

Your surgeon's right - it can take up to a year to see the final results. I had my rhino 2 months ago and although the noticible swelling was gone within 2 weeks I still have a tiny bit of uneven swelling. It's not noticible to anyone but me though. It gets better, hang in there!
