Body Contouring Surgeries are Surging

Gastric bypass surgery has become so popular recently that now we are seeing a huge growth in post gastric bypass surgeries to get rid of the 'apron of skin' that patients end up with once they've lost dozens of pounds in a short time period.

Forbes Magazine has a really good article on this today.

They quote one surgeon as saying that many people are unprepared for the radical changes in their bodies after they have gastric bypass surgery. "When they come in," Orgill says, "a lot of these patients say, 'They never told me my skin would look like this,' and they never would have gone through the bypass procedure [had they known]."

The surgeries required to get rid of the excess skin can cost $50,000 or more.

I find it a little hard to believe that people who choose bariatric surgery haven't at some point been told what will happen to their skin after surgery. It's a pretty well-discussed thing that your skin just physically can't re-contour to a dramatically reduced body size. But thankfully, plastic surgeons can help. I work with a surgeon who performs post gastric bypass surgery at his plastic surgery practice in Columbia, Maryland. This is a very complex procedure and people considering this extensive surgery should choose their plastic surgeon with great care. All patients need to get as much information as they can so that they are informed about the risks and complications of any procedure, whether it's gastric bypass, post weight loss plastic surgery, or any other time they go under the knife.
