Gap Teeth as the Latest Beauty Trend?

Submitted by Meg Wilson on November 17, 2009 - 08:22.

Are gap teeth the latest beauty world obsession? According to this article they are.

Both Chanel and British cosmetic giant Rimmel have just signed glaringly gap-toothed girls as the faces of their newest campaigns: Georgia Jagger, Mick's teenage daughter, replaces Kate Moss at Rimmel, and French actress Vanessa Paradis will be the "smile" behind Chanel's new line of lipstick, Rouge Coco de Chanel.

Young Ms. Jagger also flashes her adorable pearly goal posts in this month's British Vogue. Paradis' appeared recently on the cover of Vogue Paris.

...If you need further proof that the stars have aligned for the gap-toothed trend, consider the following headline makers with space-invaded smiles: True Blood actress Anna Paquin and model Lara Stone -- named "most wanted face of the moment" in August's W magazine and whose ID magazine cover with the tag line "Yes I think I'm sexy" is already une reference absolue in current fashion magazine circles. There's also Amy Winehouse and Madonna...

The Good Hair Movie

Submitted by Adriana Rae on November 2, 2009 - 09:18.

For an interesting discussion of the movie "Good Hair", see Anthea Butler's review. Here is an excerpt;

Apart from being a good film, Good Hair had a religious subtext that is important to look at within the context of the study of religion. You see, most of the “weave hair” ... comes from the practice of tonsure, or ritual haircutting, in Hinduism. The sacrifice of hair to the gods is the source of much of the human hair business in the United States. In fact, Rock’s documentary informs us that the hair cut for temple sacrifices is now the number one export out of India. The fact that tonsure, a religious act, has turned into a profiteering scheme is remarkable. But there also exist unscrupulous people who are stealing women’s hair, either while they sleep or in movie theaters where their braids or hair hang over the seats; while a woman is enjoying the latest from Bollywood, someone is cutting her hair and exporting it to be sold in Los Angeles.

The marriage of Hinduism and black hair care is fascinating—and troubling. The fact that hair willingly sacrificed to the gods is then sold to American women—not only black women now, but anyone who wants a shock of human hair as enhancement—is disconcerting to say the least.

Face Paint is Scary?

Submitted by Meg Wilson on October 30, 2009 - 07:58.

We might want to think twice before applying a lot of face paint on our kids this Halloween.

Some children's face paints contain lead, a neurotoxin that can harm the brain at low doses, according to new product tests documented in a report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental groups.

In some of the paints tested, the lab identified the heavy metals nickel, cobalt and chromium, which are skin allergens, even in products labeled "non-toxic" and "hypoallergenic."

Because these metals are not listed on product labels, parents shopping for Halloween makeup have no way of knowing which products are safe. The only way to know if a cosmetic product contains lead or other heavy metals is to test the product at a laboratory, which the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics did for this report at a cost of $270.00 per sample.

"Parents should not have to worry that face paint contains lead and other hazardous substances," said Lisa Archer, national coordinator of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics at the Breast Cancer Fund and a co-author of the report, "Pretty Scary."

"Companies are not making the safest products possible for children, even though kids are particularly vulnerable to toxic exposures," Archer said.

"Parents are stunned when they learn that these products made for kids have lead and other toxics in them. We don't understand how our government is so lax, nor why the manufacturers are so negligent," said Joan Blades, co-founder of Moms Rising, a coalition member and national advocacy organization focused on family health and economic security.
